For the 2022-2023 academic year, 45 students were inducted into New York Institute of Technology's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the nation's oldest and largest honor society for first-year college and university students.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, 65 students were inducted into New York Institute of Technology's chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), an organization that provides a life-changing leadership program that helps students achieve personal growth and career success and empowers them to have a positive impact in their communities.

New York Institute of Technology presented Student Engagement and Development Awards to students on its New York City and Long Island campuses who demonstrated leadership, served the university, and enhanced fellow students' experience throughout the 2022-2023 academic year.

On April 14, New York Institute of Technology undergraduate and graduate students showcased their scholarly work at the institution's annual Symposium of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE). At New York Tech's New York City campus, 119 student research projects were shared in the form of oral presentations and poster presentations. Oral presentations covered social impact topics such as the relationship between body positivity and physical health, solutions to greenhouse gas emissions in Puerto Rico, and student-led legislation to end the sale of over-the-counter weight loss and muscle-building products to minors. Technical oral presentation topics included exotic DNA structures and their role in gene instability, genome sequencing of bacteria-infecting viruses (bacteriophages), and the use of bacteriophages to combat MRSA infections. Students also shared poster presentations spanning a wide range of topics, including, among many others, the use of cannabidiols in cancer treatment and the future of telemedicine. Twenty-nine future physicians from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine's (NYITCOM) Class of 2024 were inducted into the medical school's chapter of Sigma Sigma Phi. Sigma Sigma Phi is the national osteopathic medicine honors fraternity for medical students training to become Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). NYITCOM invites only a select number of students who rank at the top of their class to apply for Sigma Sigma Phi membership. Members are selected based on outstanding academic excellence, leadership qualities, and dedication to service.

On February 9, New York Tech's Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Class of 2025 gathered for a ceremony where 26 students received white coats. The awarding of a white coat is a symbolic gesture, welcoming students into the profession as they begin their clinical rotations.

More than 580 New York Institute of Technology students received degrees as fall graduates of the Class of 2022.

New York Institute of Technology recognizes the student leaders who assist the university's Academic Success and Enrichment team, including those who serve as Peer Tutors, Peer Success Guides, and Supplemental Instruction Leaders. Peer tutors are trained students who help to provide their peers with one-on-one, convenient, and interactive support in the courses where they have demonstrated success. The Peer Success GUIDE (PSG) Program pairs first-year undergraduate students with a sophomore, junior, or senior student, who provides them with both social and academic support during their first year, helping to direct them to the many services and resources available at New York Tech. Supplemental Instruction Leaders are undergraduate students who have already passed a selected course with a grade of A- or A, and who possess strong time management and organizational skills. Among other responsibilities, these students prepare structured sessions that review and reinforce difficult material introduced in class.

Future physicians from New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine's (NYITCOM) Class of 2023 have matched into U.S. military residencies. While the "civilian" match will take place on March 17, 2023, medical students who have committed to military service learned of their residency matches in December and January, as is customary. After graduating from medical school this spring, NYITCOM's newest military physicians will begin their Graduate Medical Education (GME) in conjunction with service to their country. This spring, they will take the military oath of office at NYITCOM's 2023 hooding ceremonies. Licensed physicians entering the armed forces typically begin their rank as captain or major in the Army and Air Force and lieutenant or lieutenant commander in the Navy, though ranks can vary based on education, training, and experience. Officer training for military physicians ranges from two to 14 weeks based on the branch in which they serve. Most military physicians enlist for a minimum of three years. Military physicians deliver healthcare services to military personnel and their families and work in various settings, including hospital ships and international medical centers. Physicians enlisted in the military may also participate in international relief and humanitarian efforts, helping to care for the victims of natural disasters and other events requiring medical stability operations. U.S. Army matches include: Robert Hubley, who will complete an internal medicine residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Ariel Kleydman, who will complete a pathology residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Jini Song, who will complete an OB/GYN residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas U.S. Air Force matches include: Dana Schulz, who will complete an emergency medicine residency at Wright-Patterson Medical Center (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) in Dayton, Ohio U.S. Navy matches include: Maron Barrett, who will complete a preliminary year internal medicine residency at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, Calif. Daniel Chang, who will complete a preliminary year internal medicine residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. Brian Dreher, who will complete a transitional year residency at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, Calif. Amaka Patrick-Anaekwe, who will complete an internal medicine residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) recently welcomed the newest medical students to its Academic Medicine Scholars program. Second-year students in good academic standing are invited to apply for this competitive, merit-based opportunity to spend an additional year at NYITCOM gaining supervised research and teaching experience.

On November 18, 51 medical students showcased their research and scholarly work at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine's (NYITCOM) Fall 2022 Student Research Symposium. The event, organized by the NYITCOM chapter of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) under Associate Professor Nathan Thompson, Ph.D., and NYITCOM's Office of Research, took place in Salten Hall on the Long Island Campus. The annual symposium showcased scholarly work from students who participated in NYITCOM's many research-focused programs, including the Academic Medicine Scholar Program, the Summer Research Program, the Osteopathic Medicine, D.O./Medical and Biological Sciences, Ph.D. (D.O./Ph.D.) program, and independent student research. Throughout the day, students and their faculty mentors shared their research projects in the form of verbal presentations and poster presentations. Research topics ranged from community and global health to the toxicity of cancer treatments, concussions, vitamin deficiencies, and a variety of other subjects.

On October 30, senior students from New York Institute of Technology's nursing program participated in a food drive to benefit Long Island Cares. The community service was done in conjunction with the Nurses Association of the Counties of Long Island (NACLI), with nursing students donating groceries and money to "adopt a family" for Thanksgiving. In total, the students contributed more than $500.00 on NACLI's behalf and over 25 bags of food.

On October 19, members of New York Institute of Technology's Class of 2024 nursing program received their white coats. The Nursing White Coat Ceremony signifies the transition from classroom learning to clinical learning and represents a formal welcome into the nursing profession. It is held each fall semester of the students' junior year, before beginning their first clinical experience in health facilities. Thirty-one students were coated at this year's event.

Sixty students completed New York Institute of Technology's rigorous Internship Certificate Program over the summer, earning valuable hands-on experience and developing skills in a wide range of work environments.

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) welcomed its newest medical students during two days of celebration in Long Island, N.Y., and Jonesboro, Ark., where members of the Class of 2026 received their first white coats. The annual White Coat Ceremonies mark the beginning of NYITCOM students' medical school journey. In receiving their coats, the incoming class prepared to fill the shoes of the Class of 2022, which had a combined match rate of 99.5 percent; graduates earned impressive residencies at institutions such as The Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, and Emory University, among many others. As seen in Inside Precision Medicine, NYITCOM students working in the laboratory of cancer biologist Dong Zhang, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences, call for more effective, less toxic cancer treatments. In Zhang's laboratory, the researchers are investigating treatments to target alternative lengthening of telomere (ALT) cancers. While these cancers account for only an estimated 10 to 15 percent of cancer cases, they include some of the deadliest cancers, including glioblastoma, osteosarcoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. While many cancer treatments work by targeting telomerase, an enzyme that allows for cancer cell reproduction, ALT cancers lack this enzyme and are, therefore, more challenging to treat. The only current treatment option is chemotherapy, which is known to injure healthy cells and cause unpleasant side effects. Now, the NYITCOM researchers call for a targeted, less toxic form of therapy (ALT inhibitors) and discuss the biomarkers for diagnosing ALT-positive cancers in the clinic. Student authors include Manrose Singh, Danny MacKenzie, Sanket Desai, and Noelle Batista.

The New York Army National Guard commissioned its newest officers August 7, 2022 following their successful completion of Officer Candidate School. Five newly commissioned second lieutenants of the New York Army National Guard and their families received their oath of commissioning and officer's rank, led by New York Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Michel Natali, the Assistant Adjutant General, Army.

More than 150 students have been awarded the Theodore K. Steele Memorial Scholarship at New York Institute of Technology. The scholarship is awarded to first-year students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Nearly 70 first-year students have been awarded the Presidential Scholarship at New York Institute of Technology. This is the highest scholarship awarded to incoming first-year students.

New York Tech welcomes its newest first-year and transfer students for the fall 2022 semester.
